Course Description
There are over 18.2 million cancer survivors in the United States. Due to improvements in early detection and treatment, cancer is being identified as a chronic illness. With life extension comes multiple acute and chronic side effects, one of them being Cancer-Related Cognitive Impairments (CRCI), formerly known as “Chemo brain.” Up to 40% of non-CNS survivors have reported cognitive changes before treatment, and up to 75% of survivors have reported changes during treatment. Of the 75%, up to 35% will have chronic cognitive issues. CRCI of the non-CNS population falls into functional cognitive disorders, Subtle cognitive deficits of attention, memory, processing, and executive function that often go untreated due to difficulties identifying. This course provides the latest evidence-based and best practices for CRCI: signs and symptoms, causes, contributing factors, screening and evaluation, and treatment interventions using a functional cognitive approach. Case studies will be integrated into the course to provide an opportunity to integrate knowledge with assessments, intervention, and documentation opportunities. Labs will provide the possibility of experiential learning for mind-body and stress reduction interventions.
