Course Description

The course reviews current research regarding the benefits of exercise throughout cancer survivorship and identifies current evidence-based exercise guidelines and recommendations. The course covers common side effects of cancer, its treatment, and the role of exercise in a rehabilitation plan of care. Clinical considerations for evaluation, patient safety, treatment, and clinical outcomes using complex patient scenarios for concept integration and application.  The course will provide clinicians with a knowledge base to develop and modify plans of care based on patient presentation, past medical history, and upcoming treatments, as well as, patient goals.

Course Objectives

  • Identify 3 treatment-related side effects that may impact a patient's cardiovascular response to exercise.

  • Identify signs/symptoms of cardiotoxicity and select appropraite referral

  • Select 2 modifications to a patient's strength and aerobic exercises given a presentation of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and cancer-related fatigue

  • Using a complex case study for a patient with metastatic breast cancer, participant will select patient specific treatment goals incorporating cancer stage, and treatment progression

DPT, PhD, CLWT Erin Helm

Erin acted as director of oncology rehabilitation for a large cancer center prior to joining SRI in 2021 to provide consulting and educational development. Erin also serves as adjunct faculty at Widener University, providing Oncology Rehabilitation education and continues to provide physical therapy services to individuals with cancer. She is primary author of four peer-reviewed articles and recently received the 2021 American Physical Therapy Association’s Oncology Stephen Gudas Award for Outstanding Publication in Rehabilitation Oncology.
