- Investigate the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the lymphatic system.
- Learn the indications, precautions, and contraindications associated with lymphatic drainage.
- Explore various causes and types of lymphedema, including those related to cancer, chronic venous insufficiency, post-operative swelling, and heart failure.
- Identify signs and symptoms of lymphedema.
- The accompanying lab videos will demonstrate fundamental manual lymphatic techniques, such as lymph node emptying (supraclavicular, submental, etc.), guiding collectors to regional lymph nodes, and initiating lymphatic drainage. These techniques will serve as a foundation for the live lab sessions conducted in our other course offerings.

8:30 - Diagnosis and medical management in oncology: diagnostics, staging, grading, medical treatments: surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone and targeted therapy
9:45 - Side effects of breast cancer (acute and chronic) and benefits of massage: chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), cancer-related cognitive impairments (CRCI), cancer-related fatigue (CRF), musculoskeletal dysfunction, skin changes, pain, distress, anxiety, depression, lymphedema, and gastrointestinal dysfunction

11:00 - Evaluation, screening, client interview, phases of care, precautions: pressure considerations, contraindications for treatment.
11:44 - Lymphedema in the breast cancer population: prevalence, signs and symptoms of lymphedema and precautions with massage in high-risk clients.

1:30 - Labs: effects of cancer treatments on posture, palpation skills for musculoskeletal breast cancer dysfunction, positioning clients for comfort post-op, screening techniques for lymphedema.
2:30 - Breathing techniques: diaphragmatic. and intercostal.

3:15 - Manual techniques lab for upper quadrant: soft tissue mobilization, trigger point release, scapular mobilization, scar management techniques, myofascial release techniques for the trunk and diaphragm.
4:15 - Manual techniques lab for truncal edema (will not include full-limb)

Monday, May 6th
12:00 - Axillary webbing syndrome: Signs/symptoms followed by manual techniques.
1:00 - Lab: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: instruction signs/symptoms, deep-pressure massage – desensitization massage for CIPN, MLT for CIPN pan reduction in hands, and feet.
2:00 - Break
2:15 - Lab: Case study Integration of knowledge with case scenarios involving the practice and application of oncology massage knowledge to clients experiencing multiple treatment-related side effects.
4:15 - Q&A, course evaluation, adjourn
